Looking to tie my ancestor John Butler b. 1762, entered the 2nd VA Continental Line from Culpeper County in 1780, to a family of this county. DNA studies show that my Butlers are NOT related to William and Mary-Spencer-Armistead-Joshua-Butler-and-Grace-Page-Butlers that came into Culpeper in the 1790s. (Everyone claims this family but I suspect that many fewer people are related to it than claim it).
The grandsons of Edmund "E" Butler of Goochland/Cumberland County (father of General John and William Butler the Regulator) , John and Edmond, came into the county no earlier than 1782, according to land purchase records. DNA fits with this family, but the timing of appearance is wrong and there is no place for my John in their lineages, which are fairly well documented. However, this family may be related to the earlier Culpeper Butlers Walter and John.
Will and land records show a Walter Butler as the only Butler in the Rent Rolls of 1764; Walter died in 1778 and his will only says "son Peter Butler" and "land to be divided between my wife and children". A John Butler died in 1756 and left, according to will, children "John, James, Thomas, Anne, Sarah, Susanna & Elizabeth".
Another John, perhaps this man's son, was documented by the will of Benjamin Taylor of 1776 as "son in law". Taylor also mentioned son Thomas Taylor. When this John died in 1778, it was determined that his estate would be divided "Equal parts to Thomas Taylor, James Butler, William Collins, Thomas Butler, John Butler, Edward Jones".
Of interest is one unsourced family tree on the net that states that Thomas Taylor was married to an Unknown Butler. This might make this John a double-brother in law to Thomas through wife Mary and a sister.
Three Revolutionary War soldiers who came from Culpeper according to pension applications are my John b. 1762, a William, b. 1754 and a Benjamin, b. 1765.
Anyone with information on these early Butlers/Taylors and our 3 Butler soldiers' possible families , please answer here or write me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
