Seeking information on the Stone, Herring, Vaughan families of Brandy Station, Virginia 1700 - 1900. all replies will be appreciated. Thank you, Samuel Jones George Stone House -c. 1830 Located between Rts. 663 and 669 in Brandy Station is the Stone house, the oldest in the village. Originally a 4-room log cabin, the house has been enlarged. Here lived Harriet Stone, who gave Brandy its name, and Juliet, who kept a tavern. (The above is taken from the book HISTORIC CULPEPER - BICENTENNIAL EDITION printed in 1974 prepared and published by the Culpeper Historical Society, Inc.) "Back about 1813, some soldiers passing along the Old Carolina Road stopped at Isaac and Hannah Herring's tavern and demanded their favorite beverage, then dispensed at about ten cents a hefty glass. When none was forthcoming, they left, and in their huff scribbled 'Brandy' on the tavern's walls. And as you might expect, the stopover soon became Brandy House. About 1821, George Stone either took over Herring's or opened a new tavern and inn close-by at the corner of the Carolina and Culpeper Roads. He too, named his establishment Brandy House. Daughter Harriette-- Old Miss Harriette she later was fondly called--continued the tavern, by now a favorite boarding house for young couples." snippet from "Culpeper: A Virginia Counties History through 1920" by Eugene M.
