Death Records for John Sipes

I am looking for death records for John Sipes who died in Craig County Virginia in 1870. Ancestry shows source as Birth, Marriage, & Death - Craig County, Virginia Deaths, 1853-96

I believe this may be myggrandfather. He was married to a Mariah L. Shinn in Ill in 1865. I found the marriage records but have not been able to find him since. Most of his family were in McNairy Tenn at that time.

I found Mariah back with her family in an 1870 census in Ill. She was 20 years old and took the Shinn name back. So far I have not found John dying in Ill or Tenn.

In 1880 both my greandfather W J Sipes, as a nephew (supposed to have been born in Tenn but can not find records) and C V Sipes niece who was 10 (born in Ill in 1870) living with a brother Larson (Lawson) in the 1880 McNairy census.

William my gggrandfather left a Will written in 1888 and in 1889 leaving 1/11th of his estabe to John's children, Willie and Rosa. This tells me John had died before 1888.

I thought maybe he had joined the Militia and may have died. I know there is a Virginia Colonial Militia 1651-1776 but have not seen it on line.

Any help on the death records or any clues you may have would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
