Henry Brook and Hattie Newcomer GILPIN - Kentmere and Scaleby estates, near Boyce along Route 723, Clarke County.

Hattie N. Gilpin played a role in supporting construction of the 1913 depot at Boyce plus the expansion of station grounds. The N&W had allocated $7,500 for a new wood-frame building. Peter H. Mayo, Hattie N. Gilpin, and another estate owner contributed an additional $17,500 for the building of the masonry depot with central heating, electric lighting, and inside plumbing, plus purchase of the Page-Manning Warehouse lot and other real estate for the expanded grounds.

DONALD NEWCOMER GILPIN
Capt. Donald Gilpin, son of the Mr. and Mrs. Henry Brooke Gilpin, of Baltimore and Clarke, on Saturday, March 23, at Fort Sill, Okla., received his diploma testifying that he had successfully passed the War Course at the School of Fire.
Captain Gilpin received his commission as Captain in the Officers Training Camp, at Fort Myer last August, and has been training at Fort Sill for several months. He is now spending a few days at this home near Baltimore, and will leave this week for Camp Lee to resume command for his Battery.

The first of Clarke County's world war soldiers to return from the battlefields of France since the armistice was signed, landed on American soil this week. The are Ensign Kenneth N. Gilpin, member of the House of Delegates from Clarke and Warren counties, who is an officer in the Naval Flying Service, and Corporal Ernest F. Locke, a member of Co. H, 318th Infantry, who is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles H. Locke, of near Berryville.
Ensign Gilpin arrived at Norfolk Wednesday on the Battleship Kansas. After talking to his mother, Mrs. Henry Brooke Gilpin of "Scalby," over the long distance telephone, he left immediately for Knoxville, Tenn., where his wife has been spending the winter.
Corporal Locke left a leg on France's bloody fields. In one of the great drives, when the "Yanks" were forcing the Huns back to the Belgium frontier, a Hun shell tore off Ernest's right leg. That was on October 1, a
he has been in a hospital practically ever since. He arrived in New York Saturday, and wrote his parents that probably he would be sent to a Washington hospital for further treatment before he can come home. He says he will return to Berryville as soon as the doctors this he can safely make the trip.
Corporal Locke wrote his parents the he is feeling fine. He said he is delighted to get back to the "USA" again. Ernest was one of Clarke's boys to take up arms for Uncle Sam. he went to Camp Lee where he quickly developed into a splendid soldier. Shortly afterwards he was rewarded with a promotion to Corporal. He was wounded while leading his squad in one of the severe battles in Northern France.
Ensign Gilpin told his mother that he hoped to be in Clarke County some time next week, or the latter part of January. Mrs. Gilpin, the daughter of Gen. Laurence D. Tyson, commander of the Tennessee National Guardsmen in France, went to her mother's home in Knoxville shortly after her husband was sent to France in charge of a Naval Flying Squadron. At one time he was in command the second largest American aviation station in France.
Other Clarke boys, especially those who have been wounded, are daily expected to arrive in this country, according to letters recently received from them in France. The War Department is now transporting back thousands of the wounded.
Ensign Gilpin is likely to be honorable discharged from the service within a short time. His application for retirement has been approved by the Admiral under whom

MR. GILPIN RECEIVES ORDERS
Hon. Kenneth N. Gilpin, member of the House of Delegates from Clarke and Warren counties, who last fall offered his services to the government and enlisted in the Naval Reserve Flying Corps, and while in Richmond serving in the Legislature, successfully passed the physical examination for this service, has received order to report to the Naval Air Station, Naval Air Base, Hampton Roads, VA for training.
Mr. Gilpin, who was married March 23, was unable to complete his wedding trip, having reported to the commanding officer of the Naval Air Station on Tuesday and was given a few days furlough to come home to adjust his business affairs before entering into active service. He recently complete his second term in the Legislature, where he has faithfully served his constituency, having at all times felt his responsibility to his State and District.

LUCY TRUMBULL MITCHELL GILPIN
Mrs. Kenneth N. Gilpin, Jr., 48, of Boyce, the former Lucy Trumbull Mitchell, died last Wednesday at her home "Kenmere." Mrs. Gilpin was born in Detroit, MI, August 2, 1925. She was the daughter of the late General William "Billy" Mitchell and the late Mrs. Thomas Boling Byrd. She was a graduate of Foxcroft School and Vassar College. She was a member of the Board of Trustees of Lord Fairfax Community College, a founder of the Greenway Garden Club, former president of the Board of Trustees of the Powhatan School and also a past member of the Board of Trustees of the Foxcroft School. Mrs. Gilpin is survived by her husband, Kenneth N. Gilpin, JR; three sons, Kenneth Newcomer Gilpin, III, John Mitchell Gilpin and Thomas Tyson Gilpin.
A graveside service was conducted Friday at 4 pm at the Old Chapel Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Thomas Hill, E.B. Lee, John E. McIntosh, John Friant, Sr., Benjamin Harrison and Charles Schutte. Honorary pallbearers were John Kelly Lloyd, Dana Cotton, Roland Mitchell, Gordon Joost, David R. Dunning, George Greenhalgh III, W. Conroy Wilson. John Clement, Gwynne Jones and John D. O'Rourke. Others were Donald Niemann, Kevin Cornwell, William B. Clagett, Benjamin Bullard, George Greenhalgh, John Friant, Jr., Charles Funkhouser and William Cook.

LEWIS M. ALLEN, JR.
Lewis M. Allen, Jr., of New York City, one of Broadway's most highly regarded producers died December 8, at the age of 81. Mr. Allen, son of the late Dr. and Mrs. Lewis M. Allen, was born in Winchester. His father was well known in this area as an outstanding obstetrician and a breeder of fine shoe horses. His mother, active in the affairs of Winchester, was the first woman elected to the City Council and served for a time as Vice-Mayor.
Mr. Allen attended the local schools of Winchester and was a Phi Beta kappa graduate of the University of Virginia. During the War, he drove an ambulance with the American Field Service in Africa, Italy, France and Germany and after the surrender was among the first to help with the cleanup of Belsen, one of the most notorious concentration camps.
After the war, he settled in New York and was soon involved in show business when he went to work with his friend, producer Bob Whitehead, whom he had met in the service. Lewis later opened his own production company and proceeded to produce his plays and motion pictures form more than five decades. His film career began auspiciously with Francis Ford Coppola's Oscar-nominated, "The Connection" in 1974. Other films he helped to bring to the screen were: "Never Cry Wolf", "Fahrenheit 451", "Lord of the Flies", " The Balcony", "Swimming to Cambodia", and "The Firecracker Contest." On Broadway he produced around a score of shows, was nominated for seven best play Tony Awards and won three -- for "Annie," which he co-produced with Mike Nichols in 1977, "I'm Not Rapport" in 1986 and "Master Class" in 1996. Other shows which he helped bring to Broadway were: "My One and Only", "Half a Sixpence", "The Physicists", Big Fish, Little Fish", A Few Good Men", and
"Tru," based on the life of Truman Capote and written by his wife, Jay Presson Allen, who is recognized as one of the top writers in the business.
In 1995, He was honored by his home town when he was awarded an honorary degree by Shenandoah University.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Brooke; two brothers, Howard on Middleburg, Virginia, and Douglas of West Chester, Pennsylvania; and twin granddaughters, Evie and Lizzie.
