I have a brick wall I have been trying to break down with little success. I wonder if the South Central Virginia Genealogy Society would have any luck at least putting a crack in that wall for me.
The culprits name is James W. Alexander. I do not know what the W. stands for. Here is what I know about him. He married Jane B. Nash on December 08, 1843. Jane is the daughter of James Nash and Jean Virginia Pugh. Witnessing the marriage was Thomas D. Moore, Mary Nash. Mary Nash is Jane's sister I believe. I am not sure if Thomas Moore has a famly connection to the family or not.
I can only trace James W. Nash in the tax records from 1842 to 1844. Interestingly he shows no ownership of land, horses, cattle. He then disappears. He and his wife have one child during that time, Lavelett Alexander who was born on October 12, 1845. Mother and daughter appear in the 1850 census living in the household of Jane's sister and brother-in-law, James H. and Martha Nash Tucker in Aspenwall. In later censuses Jane appears as a widow.
Interestly, there was a James Waddell Alexander who was a Presbyterian minister in Charlotte County from 1826 through 1828. This James w. Alexander was the son of the Reverend Archibald Alexander, one time president of Hampden Sydney College. I am nearly positive this is not the James W. Alexander I seek. The Reverend James W. Alexander was married to Elizabeth Cabell, they married before my couple, had many children, moved to NY and NJ, returned to Allegany county,VA where he died in 1859; she outlived him, passing in 1885.
The only other Alexander I can find living in Charlotte County and who was a contemporary of my James was a physician, Archibald D. Alexander. He was the son of Joseph Alexander and Sarah Reid. Archibald D. Alexander was a cousin to the Reverend James Waddell Alexander. Archibald did have a brother named James born in 1791 but I can find no information on him. I have not found anything to connect my James W. Alexander to Archibald D. Alexander as yet. I have long felt that the two men had some family connection which I have not uncovered. There is another Alexander family in the picture too.
Col. Girard Alexander passed through Charlotte County and settled in Campbell County. His son, Henry Ashton Alexander has been erroneously listed as Jane B. Nash's husband in some genealogies I have seen online. the Col.was married several times and I have often wondered if his 2nd wife has a connection to my family. Her name was Matilda Douglas. The name Douglas is passed down through the children and grandchildren of Lavelett Alexander. I can only find one child of Matilda Douglas and Col. Girard Alexander and his name is George Douglas Alexander.
