Located on Barnetts Road, this Methodist cemetery in Charles City Co VA was badly desecrated by relic hunters in 1971 who dug up many of the mounds. Church members worked hard to repair the damage, but many mounds were destroyed. Undoubtedly there are many more unmarked graves than are cited here.
Salem Church Cemetery
33 Unknown graves (some of these are thought to be Adams, Ladd, Marks, Barnett, Sheffield)
Inscription on Memorial Stone:
Dedicated Sept 11, 1960. This the former site of Salem Methodist Episcopal Church, built before the War Between the States. Salem was second in age among the four pioneer Charles City Methodist Episcopal Churches which merged in 1948 to create Memorial Methodist Church at Charles City Courthouse. In 1864, Salem served as a field hospital for both Northern and Southern soldiers. A number of Federal soldiers, who were buried at Salem, later were removed to Northern cemeteries. The church was closed during the 1930's and the congregation worshipped at Mt. Pleasant until the merger.
(Understand that even today, Charles City Co VA has no towns).
I will do look-ups if wanted.
