I hesitate to mention this because I can not re-locate the reference which caused me to remember this and I hope its not a red herring for you.
Recently I was researching the early Charles City land records for a property in the Wilcox Neck area and came upon a deed which used "Nance" as an adjoiner for my property. I can not remember specifically if it used the words Nance's Neck or just Nance but it stood out in my mind because I had not previously associated the name Nance/Nantz with this area of the county.
The property I was researching is located near the intersection of Route 615 and 623 and in earlier times it was known as Chandler's Old Field.
Interesting, and perhaps supportive, that your research shows the Nance property as being a larger tract in James City. Prior to the 1720's the Wilcox Neck area of Charles City was within the boundaries of James Parish. It was ceded to Charles City around 1720 when the boundary between the two counties was shifted to its current location.
I hope this is helpful and doesn't send you off on a false trail.
