Susan- There were Eppes in Charles City Co. as early as 1635 or before. A Francis Eppes patented 1700 acres in Aug. of 1635 near junction of Bayles Creek & Appomattox River. I know that a William Eppes had a plantation of the James River in early 1600's. In "The Virginia magazine of history and biography, Volume 3 By Virginia Historical Society", beginning on page 397, there is a long list of Eppes (several pages) in the Charles City & Prince George Cos. area in 1600 and 1700's including several William's. Several served as Sheriff or Burgess of CC Co. I beleive all were descendants of Francis.
