Just guessing, mind you, but I'd say that Elisha had a brother, Elliott T. In 1860 he was living not too far from Elisha and his family was listed as;

972       Bowden       Elliot T.       25       m
972       Bowden       Elizabeth       28       f
972       Bowden       Ryburn        6 m
972       Bowden       Serilda        2       f
972       Litteral, Julia A.       23       f

Note that they had a son by the same name and age, although he could have been enumerated twice while visiting one place or another.

Still guessing, I'd say that both Bowdens were sons of John, who, again did not live too far away. (Elisha at 1060, Elliott at 972 and John at 1210);

1210       Bowden       John        52       m
1210       Bowden       Doritha        48       f
1210       Bowden       Francis M.       14       m
1210       Bowden       Timothy N.       11       m
1210       Bowden       William A.       6       m

All were gone from Carroll by 1870
