I am researching my husband's grandmother's line. Roberta Howlette was born 1921. Her father's name was Vivian. I was told he worked for the Pinkerton Detectives.
Vivian had a relative, possibly brother, named Mack. I'm told that Mack was in jail when his gang (possibly more brothers) broke him out. There was a gunfight and a Judge, attorney, and some deputies were shot and killed. Mack was later hung for this. I was also told that this whole story is documented at Harmon's Museum in Carroll Co., Va. That is what makes me think it happened nearby.
Anyway, this is all family forklore. Can anyone tell me the factual story or is anyone near the Harmon's Museum and is able to check it out for me?
I see there is a Howlett line from Carroll County. But, I haven't seen any reference to this.
Any assistance is greatly appreciated,
