I have researched all the resources available in Carroll and have not come up with anything more than what you have already. The death records in Carroll start at 1854 and James B. Henley apparently died before 1850. Elizabeth died sometime between 1860 and 1870 and the death records were pretty sketchy during the war years.

Here is what I have on the children of James and Elizabeth;

best regards,
Ron Hall

Notes for JOHN HENRY HALL:

John Hall was a stout man who is remembered by his grandson, Charles Hall, as being extremely strong. He could carry two hundred pounds without any problem or a 15 gallon keg on one shoulder. Pictures I have of him show him to be about 5'11'' in height. One picture taken probably in his forties, shows him to be a muscular man of close to 200 pounds and bald.

The 1880 Census shows him and his wife living with his father, William Hall, at age 17. This is an error since both would have been 19.

As a child, John's family was extremely poor. Of course, one has to remember that when John was born, the Civil War was about to start, so during his childhood, the shortages endured by the people of the South would have occured during his childhood. They lived near the covered bridge which used to be on rt 100. His son told me that his father related to him about having to shake locusts off a bush to feed the hogs. He also told me a story that once his dad, who was a child at the time, caught a couple of grampuses (large lizards) in Big Reed Island creek and threw them out on a rock. A sow ate them and died within fifteen minutes. Undoubtedly this loss to the family food supply was devastating.

John bought a log cabin from Enos Bowman about 2 miles west of Highway 52 about 7 miles south of Hillsville. It was still standing in the yard of Elmer Hall in 1993 who inherited his father's home place. Water came from a spring in the hollow below the house but in later years, a shallow well (about 40 feet) was dug above the house. John was a farmer all his life and like his brother Jim, was a man who would fight anyone at any time. Howard Hall told me that his father, Joseph Benjamin (John and Jim's younger brother), often spoke of James and John fighting each other and that you could track them by the blood they left. He would often throw water on them to break them up.

John was a respected member of the community and in 1912, when the Allen family shot up the court in Hillsville, John and his son Elmer were plowing near the Old Mine Branch School. The news was received by Floyd Horton, a neighbor who had a telephone and John changed clothes and went to town. He was deputized and helped put Floyd Allen in jail. He was gone for five days until the Baldwin-Felts detectives restored order in the town. During this time, there was a fear that the Allens would try to rescue Floyd and the first night, a large fire was started in front of the Tom Hall Hotel to light up the area.

Burial: Skyview Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, Carroll County, VA

v. ELIZA MIRIAM SEMONES1, b. 01 Jun 1862, Carroll County, VA1; d. 16 Apr 1919, Snake Creek, Carroll County, VA1; m. JAMES ANDREW HALL1, 20 Nov 1879, Hillsville, VA1; b. 24 Nov 1859, Carroll County, VA1; d. 03 Mar 1939, Snake Creek, Carroll County, VA1.

Cause of death (Facts Pg): Pneumonia while she had measles1

Notes for JAMES ANDREW HALL:

He was primarily a laborer/farmer all his life. The census of 1880 shows him at age 21 as a laborer and his wife, age 19 as "keeping house."

Surviving pictures show he was a short, rather fat man in his later years. John Alderman estimated his height to be about 5' 7". All who remember him say he had a reputation for fighting and drinking in his younger days. He reportedly carried rocks in his pockets to fight with until they wore smooth, and would then get new ones. Howard Hall recalls him telling of a fight with a man where they hit each other in the head with the same rock. The same story was related to me by Early Webb. The man he was fighting was Mr. Webb's uncle who was a brother to Sheriff Lew Webb who was killed in the famous Courthouse shoot-out in Hillsville, VA. The fight was over Webb's refusal to get liquor for Hall. Howard also remembers him telling of a fight he was in with a man who kept him so "busy knocking his licks off that he couldn't get the rock out of his pocket."

In 1990, Elmer Hall, (Jim Hall's nephew) who was in his eighties, remembered a particular "fighting rock" which Jim Hall carried and described it as 4 to 5 inches long and an inch or inch and a half in diameter. In his later years, when he joined the church, James laid his rock in the fork of an apple tree and left it. His grand daughter, Martha Ellen Horton, told me in 1990 that "half of Carroll Co. looked for the rock as a souvenir."

John Alderman tells of his father (who was George Alderman) and James Hall attending school in the spring of 1870 under the tutelage of Elder Isaac Webb and figuring that on the last day of school, his authority over them was ended. Thus they planned to meet and fight after school that day. James was accompanied by his younger brother John Hall who got into a fight with George Alderman's nephew. The Hall boys, being poor, had brought their lunch of corn bread in a basket. John butted his opponent in the stomach knocking him down beside the basket. The boy reached into the basket, picked up a piece of the corn bread and threw it at John, hitting him in the head. The blow knocked him unconscious and it scared all the boys so badly that the fight ended. They carried water from the creek in a felt hat and revived John. Mr. Alderman said Jim and his father used to laugh about it in their later years when they would meet.

Notes for JOSEPH BENJAMIN HALL:

In his later years he was known as Squire Ben Hall; a justice of the peace. In 1990, John Alderman told me that as a young lawyer, he tried many a case before "Squire Ben." The earliest record I found of his appointment as a Justice was January 1, 1908 for 4 years in the Laurel Fork Magisterial District. There are records that show his continuing appointment for many years afterward.

Unlike his brothers, he apparently was never "wild" or prone to fighting. He was a church going, peaceable man who never used profanity. He was short, weighed about 138 pounds and muscular. He was known around the county as a champion rifle shot and wrestler. In the late part of the 19th century, wrestling was quite popular. Ben Hall once "threw" 27 men in a single afternoon. Other shooters would often seek him out to challenge him to shooting matches.

Ben bought his father's property and kept him for close to 20 of the last years of his life. Ben, being a justice of the peace, filled out the death certificate when his father died.

Benjamin Hall, along with his brothers James and John and his sister Rachel, all married brothers and sisters; the children of John William and Mary Ann Semones. Ben Hall is buried in the Henley Cemetery, Carroll County, VA with his wife Patra.
