Hi Valerie,

Although I've got you on my E-mail list and have communicated with you before, I thought I'd send this to you via the Genforum list since this is where I found your thread between you and Ron Hall on the LEONARD names.

The LEONARD name is in the Cana area of Carroll County, VA. There's plenty of descendants in that area bordering NC. One of them owns a grove of fruit tree groves (peaches and apples), and I buy from them at the Greensboro Farmer's Market. :-)

The HUTCHENS name is mostly in Surry County from what I've found. In the late 1800s - 1930s, lots of couples got married in either Mt. Airy/Dobson in NC, or Hillsville, Cana, or Galax in VA. From what I've been told it was due to the changing nature of the laws about who could get married, age, blood tests, etc. You'll find quite a few marriages of NC couples in Hillsville at the courthouse.

The mention of James Miles WHITAKER (b. 10-25-1847, d. 08-10-1926) struck a cord with me since he's in my line of WHITAKER names. His first marriage was to Delphia Ann KEY (b. 06-01-1847, d. 07-21-1897). Both of them are buried at New Bethel Baptist Church, Piper's Gap Rd, Surry County, NC. "Piper's Gap" is in the northwest area of Surry County and the Piper's Gap Rd connects US 52 above Mt. Airy to Galax, VA which is in the southwest corner of Carroll County at the Grayson County, VA line.

Hope this helps. Would love to exchange additional data.

See ya!

Bob Carter
