The family you seek in Carroll may have been listed as "Dickens." The census takers and county clerks used "Dinkins and Dickens" pretty interchangeably. The oldest I'm familiar with is Jess Dickens, born about 1803. He married Susannah Webb in 1824. I've never researched the family but can possibly find out who his father was.

I suspect your Alexander was too old to have been one of their children, but a brother is possible. I know one of Jess' sons named his son, "Alexander."
