James King, RS, of Caroline
Posted by: Edwin King (ID *****5416) Date: May 28, 2011 at 09:08:33

On a number of occasions my ggggfather, James King, in applying for a pension for rev. War service, stated that he was born in Caroline County. Further he stated that he served under Lieutenant Selden of F'burg. He also states that he served under Major Sneed. The census of Edgefield County S.C., Rev. War. pensioners of 1840 includes this James King and indicates that he is living in the household of a Margaret Sharpton, whom he says is his daughter. I have noted several Kings being mentioned in posts on this board but have not seen a James King of 1750-1780s mentioned. I know that he was in Edgefield County before 1790 for he is listed on the 1790 Edgefield census. He died in Edgefield in 1841?. The DAR's records indicate that James King served in the Virginia 4th Regiment. There is also a notation on one of his applications for pension that includes the following:" The first service mentioned on King's 1832 declaration was apparently in the militia: Robert Ware was a captain in the Caroline County Militia." Seek info on the parents, family, date of arrival in Caroline and from where, etc. of this James King. Thanks. Ed King edwinking@webtv.net
