Dear Caroline County,
I could use the help of Caroline County researchers in a cemetery
preservation/history project here in Charlottesville VA(see "Of Grave
Concern" cemetery web site at the end of this message). Maplewood cemetery
holds the remains of Elizabeth BANKHEAD Magruder (or her memorial), daughter
of James Bankhead and Christian Miller, granddaughter of Dr. James Bankhead
and Elinor Monroe, and direct descendants of Elizabeth. Elizabeth lived in
Port Royal for much of her life.
I am attempting to collect histories of some of the most neglected graves at
this city owned cemetery. I will use these histories to continue to pressure
the city for better care. Many of these graves are of people not already
researched by local Charlottesville historians so the task is daunting.
Elizabeth's 6 ft headstone was shattered by careless city groundskeepers last
I am not a genealogist but I have managed to gather some info on Elizabeth
and her descendants from a few online genealogies, web sites, and one book
on Caroline County VA, I found at my local library. But this history is far
from complete and I am working on many other families within the cemetery at
the same time. I'm hoping to find someone who can give her the research she
deserves and who knows how to gather the additional information needed to
make a more complete history. Someone who can access documents from the
Caroline County Historical Society or court house would be extremely useful!!
Please contact me if you are interested in volunteering....we can talk more
about the project and how to proceed.
