Old family records (absolutely NO documentation) says his first wife was a Quarles - perhaps Mary Quarles who died in childbirth. His name is said to be William Carter Marshall - named for both grandfathers. His mother, Margaret died about 1807 & numerous law suits followed. His parents lived near Guiney in Caroline, not far from the Spotsylvania Co home of John Carter, father of Margaret, the mother of William C. Marshall. His father, John, a Capt in the ARW seems to have died during & as a result of the war.

I am a descendant of John Marshall's sister Sarah - their parents were William Marshall & Elizbeth Williams.
