In the story below, my ancestor Nancy McClure was supposedly born in "Lynchburg, VA" in 1792. Since Lynchburg was not formed until 1852, it is possible that Nancy was actually born in Campbell County, VA. Can anyone help me verify any part of the following story? Can anyone suggest where a record of Nancy's birth might be found if she was, in fact, born in Campbell County?
-- Dan Durham
In her 1934 book “The McClures”, Mrs. Mabel B. McClure wrote, on page 29:
“John McClure married Rebecca Ewing, born in Ireland and in 1790 they emigrated to America. Their children’s names are:
1. James (Jim) 4. John Ewing
2. William (Billie) 5. Nancy
3. Robert (Bob) 6. Mary (Polly)
"On their arrival in America, they first settled near Baltimore, Maryland. Later they went to Virginia, settling near Lynchburg. From there they went to Washington County, Tennessee and located near Doakes College.
"JOHN EWING McCLURE, 1790-1835, was born in the vicinity of Baltimore, Maryland, three months after his parents arrived in this country from Ireland. Shortly after his birth, his parents moved to Lynchburg, VA, where they lived until John grew to manhood.” Nancy and Mary were supposedly born in Lynchburg, VA.
