Well, I don't know if this is it or not, but there was no Clarence or Dorsey or John Henry but there was a FREDERICK RATLIFF in the 1860 census of Buchanan Co Va age 17:
His family is living beside some of my HOBBS family line, Samuel HObbs and Charlotte Gross.
Buchanan Co VA annotated 1860 census:
William Ratliff age 45 farmer born in Va
Caroline P. (Ward) age 32 (d/o Milton & Martha Ward) born in VA: Caroline 2nd wife: married in April 1 1852; Caroline born Feb 2 1826, died June 8 1890.
Williams first wife was Frances McGlothlin :
children by Frances
John M Ratliff age 20 farmer
Jacob Ratliff; age 18: married Rebecca Cordilla Compton.
FREDERICK RATLIFF age 17, farmer born Aug 18 1843 died April 28 1916
Shadrick Ratliff age 14
Loueasy RAtliff age 12
Nancy Ratliff age 10
William Anderson Ratliff age 6; son of William and Caroline born Oct 19 1854 (d) July 22 1926.
James M. Ratliff age 4, (b) July 1 1854 (d) Oct 27 1933
Alexander Ratliff age 2
Eleanor Ratliff age 3
Francis M. Ratliff 6 months
Oscar Keen, age 24, laborer
I did notice that one other RATLIFFF man married a McGlothlin girl:
Shadrack Ratliff age 40 married Rachel McGlothlin. Now just in case brothers married sisters (which happened a lot back than) Shadrack's parents are mentioned as RICHARD RATLIFF AND LYDIA RATLIFF (oops! prob. cousins). Might be a connection and maybe not, but it doesn't hurt to research all the possiblities.
Needless to say; that was a full house, hahah.
Hope this helps
