The only Payne/Pane family in Buchanan Co Va 1860 census is this one:
house #343
James L. Pane, age 33 farmer
Nancy (Breeding) age 16 (her age should be at least 26, because their marriage date is Sept 2, 1849)
Priscilla age 5
Sarah age 3
Susannah age 2
Albert J. "Matney" age 18, laborer

This Payne family is living beside the Adkins family on one side and Stacy family on the other. They live a few houses from my gr gr grandfather, John Hobbs.

in house 345 lives
John Matney 22 (son of David & Polly Matney)
Mary [Stacy] age 21 wife
Simon Matney age 1
thought this was interesting, since there aren't that many "Simons" in Buchanan Co; and Albert Matney is working for James Payne, might be a connection somewhere to your Paynes:

No Muncy's were in Buchanan Co 1860

Have you researched Tazewell Co, yet?
I may be able to get to the library this weekend, if I do, I will take your names with me and see what I can find.

Barbara in Tazewell Co Va
