I've looked over the will too and tried to come up with an answer. I do have the following:
The Christopher Mason in the John Nanney Will dated 26th of January 1789 was Christopher Jr. whose wife was Martha. Christopher Mason Sr.'s will was probated 23 Nov 1778 in Brunswick Co.
I haven't checked the deeds of Sussex but would imagine the David Mason may have been Col. David Mason that was a neighbor. At one time he owned over 10,000 acres in Sussex Co. David was an uncle of Christopher Mason Jr. above and also an Executor of his brother Christopher Mason Sr.'s Will.
I also have this document and feel sure you do also:
Will of John Nanney Feb 11, 1804 wife Elcy, children Drury Nanney, Sally Wesson, Rebecca Wesson, Shadrach Nanny, Molley Whidbey Rody Moore, Jordan Nanny.
Executors: Isaac Wesson and Drury Nanney. Witnesses: Claiborne House, Washington Wesson and Green Wesson. Probate indicates Isaac Wesson qualified to execute with Claiborne House and James Mason, his securities
The James Mason above was a son of Christopher Mason Jr. He married Polly Hancock 1808 Brunswick Co. You also see the Wessons and wasn't it Isaac Wesson who married Sally Nanney in the will above? In fact, just a few years later in 1808 Anderson Wesson married Jincy Mason, sister to James Mason witnessing in the will above. Prior to that, Isaac Wesson represented the younger children of Christopher Mason and wife Martha in a settlement following the death of Martha Mason in 1806 Brunswick Co.
At one time I wondered if Martha Mason was a Nanney but it appears from the first will there was not a daughter named Martha. Then I wondered if Christopher Mason was witnessing because of the Nanney/Moore marriage? We somehow have a connection it appears to the Moore family as the first son of Christopher Mason Sr. and Sarah Chappell was named Sterling Mason and appears the name Sterling is from the Moores. I do have Moore connections on my Newsom side but I've no answer for the name Sterling on the Mason side.
Not sure I've helped at all but will be happy to share anything I may have.
Carolyn Mason Anderson
