I don't know anything about what you're talking about, however I did want to point out that Repps is a pretty common uncommon first name in the Brunswick County area Jones families (yes I did mean "common uncommon" so hopefully you understand my meaning!).

Although there really is no such thing as a misspelled name during this time period either Reps or Repps would be acceptable as a first name derived from the surname Repps, which itself comes from the name of a village in England.
