Hello, I saw your query on Rottenberry (variant spellings) family. The Rottenberry's lived on Plumtree Island in the 1730's and 1740's. Plumtree Island is on Roanoke River and on NC/VA state line. However, both Brunswick, VA and Bertie Co., NC claimed it as theirs. In the 1740's the Rottenberry's were on road gangs in Brunswick County that cleared roads from Plumtree Island to Butcher's Road and Cocke Creek. They were closely associated with the Calverts, Colsons, Chavis, Mulkeys, and Webb families that lived on Plumtree Island and next to it. One of the men on the road gang was named Weldon. He founded the town of Weldon, NC. Plumtree Island is east of town. Richard Colbert (aka Calvert) Notify Administrator about this message?
