There were a lot of John Webbs, since John was a common and popular name.
The first mention of this John is in this will of 1758.
The next mention is in the Albemarle Parish Records of 1761. John and Lucy Webb brought a daughter Sally to be Christened. It is my belief that John's family turned away from the state church and became involved in the strong Baptist movement at Sussex. That meant no more parish records on him.
The next mention of this John is in the will of Elizabeth Webb in Brunswick County. His brother Charles was back in Sussex. John and Micajah were on Fontaine or Fountain Creek and the Meherrin River. That was west of Emporia, Virginia, about six miles from the North Carolina line.
John is mentioned in some of the tax records of Brunswick and later Greensville, since that part of Brunswick became part of Greensville.
John is mentioned in some of the marriage records of Greensville. Temperance Webb, daughter of John Webb, married a Cato.
John Webb signed the Greensville Petition in 1787. So did a son, Micajah Webb, Jr. So did his son, Charles Webb. Micajah Webb, Jr., was John's son and is last found at Dinwiddie about 1830.
Another reference to John Webb is when he and Lucy sold some property to a Capell connection in Northampton County, North Carolina -- just across the line.
I have not found John Webb or his family in Greensville in the late 1790s. Charles Webb married Delilah Ezell, daughter of William Ezell. They migrated through North Carolina into South Carolina by the 1800 census. John and Lucy Webb may have also moved.
We recently discovered that John Webb's wife, Lucy, may have been Lucy Dunn. Her parents were John Dunn II and Lucy Dunn. John and Lucy Dunn migrated into Franklin, North Carolina. His will there in 1791 mentions daughter Lucy Webb. That's only a theory at this point, but seems strong.
Another John Webb of Greensville County, North Carolina, was John Webb, Jr. He was not the son of John Webb. He was the son of John's brother Micajah.
Micajah Webb had a pretty good size family. He left a will. Most of his family seemed to migrate out of the area after his death. I will look at my file to see what it says of John Webb, Jr.
Not far from John Webb and Micajah Webb was a John Webb in Northampton County, Virginia. He was married to Mary Pritchard. He also came from Virginia. I have suspicions that he may have been a brother of Robert Webb, Jr., and Charles Webb. It's just a suspicion at this point.
There was also a John Webb in one of the counties west of Brunswick and Greensville. He was married to Leanna Bayse.
There were other John Webbs. In fact, there was another John and Lucy. You can find mention of most of these John's on the Webb family genforum.
