Heidi, thank you for responding. The history of this Virginia County appears quite complex. The names and dates that you suggested are TOO early for my ancestors who were supposed to immigrate around 1845 or a few years before. The only REAL "hard" data I have is a piece of information found by Genealogist, George Russell. He found an advertisement in the BOSTON PILOT, 2 October 1852: "INFORMATION WANTED--of James Russell, of parish Drumeleags, townland Castle Donavon [co.Cork] {Ireland}, who came to this country in 1848. When last heard from he was in Tarrytown, N.Y. Any information of him will be thankfully received by his brother, Patrick Russell, Jackson, Old Hickory Postoffice, VA."

So I am trying to figure out where the Old Hickory Postoffice was in 1852. I am assuming that my relative, Patrick Russell (b 1817) (and his wife, Ellen McCarthy Russell b-1821), where either living in Lynchburg or somewhere relatively close (within 1/2 day's buggy ride?) of the postoffice sometime between at least 1850 and 1854 when two of their children were born (1860 census records). If you know of the present day location of this historic postoffice, it might give me a better feel for the area he settled. We also believe he was a manager for a plantation near Lynchburg. I don't know if there are any plantation records between 1848 and 1858, but certainly would like to know what kind of record-keeping they had then. We know that they migrated to Minnesota prior to 1860 because they appear in the 1860 census in Sheldon, Houston Co., Minnesota. Also, Patrick filed a land patent, dated 2 April 1857 in Sheldon.

In conclusion, we think that Patrick and Ellen Russell were probably in Virginia (Lynchburg area?) sometime between roughly 1848 and 1856 (eight year span). They may also have been in Virginia around 1845 when they got married--but no concrete data to this effect.

Thank you Heidi for taking time to pull records. Pat Russell
