Although South Mountain doesn't show up on my modern-day atlas (so I can't find it), back when the 1790 census was taken, Botetourt County covered much more area than it does now. In 1790, Botetourt County covered all of present-day Botetourt, most of Roanoke County, most of Craig County, all of Alleghany County, and part of Bath County. Maybe if you could find an older atlas and look in those present-day counties, South Mountain may show up.
