David,
If your Painter family lived in the Fredrick Co., VA, area from the early 1750's and are of German origin, then your immigrant ancestor was Mathias Bender of PA. The name got changed when they moved to the Shenandoah Valley as did many other German names. Mathias was a Palatinate German which means he was from the Palatine area in Germany. Several Painters married siblings of my ancestors - Stapleton and Davis - both which were of German origin.
