I have tried to research a John SMITH and a Martha WOODS who married on May 4, 1780 in Botetourt Co. My information comes from a book of Botetourt marriages from 1770 to 1853.
They might be the parents of my Lavinia SMITH b. ca. 1785.
I have also seen this same named couple in some posts as being married in Mercer or Fayette Co., KY on May 4, 1778. However, there is never any mention of children.
There were many WOODS living in Botetourt at this time, having come from Albemarle Co. In fact, Martha's father is listed as a Michael WOODS, Jr. and he did die in Botetourt Co. in 1777.
I have also even seen the same named couples listing for a 1780 marriage in Hempstead, Long Island, New York with two daughters listed as Lavinia??
Did the SMITH/WOODS couple move so shortly after getting married in Botetourt Co, that they moved to Kentucky, thus everyone assuming that's where they were married?
The May 4 date is key because it was Martha WOODS birthday.
If so, then why was daughter Lavinia, back in Botetourt Co. in 1802 where was was married. The book does list her father as John and if he did die in 1789 she might have returned to Botetourt Co.
My Lavinia states she was born in VA on census.
My questions are, Botetourt Co. or Kentucky birth and marriage for Martha and John? Any children known from this couple?
