Thanks for the advice. They were quite helpful at the Washington & Lee library, even though there wasn't a lot to choose from. If you have heard the story about a Springfield gunsmith named Silor who repaired a rifle for Daniel Boone, and one of Boone's rifles is now in the possession of the family of John Heck McClelland, you can't imagine how many times I read that story over the past couple days! But not much else, unfortunately.
Tomorrow we are headed toward Natural Bridge. We drove over there today, but didn't accomplish much in that area except booking the weekend in the Yogi Bear campground that is right next to Natural Bridge. It is $16/person to go through the bridge, so we are hoping to at least look around a bit and ask questions, and we didn't have time this afternoon (spent the day at the W&L library and the courthouse). Tomorrow we will go to the Rockbridge courthouse again and look at some plat maps we didn't get a chance to see today (we have a copy of one but there is no year on it, but I saw your Petticrews on it), and then to Roanoke where the library has some books about the Hecks and some papers about the Harshbargers.
Over the weekend, we will check out Natural Bridge and maybe do some touristy stuff (zoo, wild animal park) and if we have time, the library in Fincastle on Saturday, and then Sunday try to find someone at High Bridge church who might have some cemetery records. Maybe someone there will know the location of our cemetery, and/or where your Petticrews are buried. If I find out, I will surely post here. Then the courthouse in Fincastle on Monday, perhaps the state capital on Tuesday if there is anything we can get there, and then back home on Wednesday.
