Bricks / brickmaking

My ancester, John Abel, married Elizabeth (Betsy Hypes) on January 22, 1793 at Fincastle, Botetourt Co, VA. John Abel bought lots numbered 39 & 40 in Greenville, Botetourt County, VA and in 1801 he bought lot number 39 there. He (John) was probably a brick maker by trade.

John and Betsy's son Henry Abel was said to have built the first Brick house in Jay County. Indiana. Henry Abel and Benjamin Goldsmith laid out the town of Lancaster (later changed to Salamonia) in Madison Twp, Jay Co., IN in 1839.

If you have any information about bricks or brickmaking in or around Greenville, Botetourt Co. or the Hypes / Abel / Franklin / related families of Botetourt Co., please send me an e-mail at: sommerjd@worldnet.att.net
