Joanne - We meet again. I hope I can clear up some questions for you on the Bedford/Albemarle Co. Rowlands. I'll give it a try!
Robert Rowland md. Taby White on 8/12/1790 in Bedford Co., Va with the consent of Stephen White (assumed father), Wm. Leftwich, surety
This Robert Rowland was the son of Henry Rowland who left a Will in 1773 Bedford Co whch named his wife Penelope and 4 children whose names were NOT mentioned. A provision was made in Henry's Will that his Estate not be divided until his last (youngest) child reached maturity.
Henry Rowland (b. ca 1739) md. Penelope Clark , the d/o Micajah Clark and Judith Adams, s/o Christopher Clark and Penelope Johnson. I can provide PROOF of this lineage.
Indeed, Henry's 4 children were quite young when Henry died in 1773. It appears that they came under the guardianship of their uncle Reuben Rowland of Albemarle Co. IN 1785 Robert Rowland placed himself as an apprentice to Lewis Johnson, millwright until the age of 21 in Albemarle Co. Robert was likely about 14 when he chose to become an apprentice (Va. law).. So he was likely born ca 1771.
HOW do I know Robert was the son of Henry and Penelope Clark Rowland??
The Division of Henry's Estate was finally made in 1794 in Bedford Co. - a full 21 years after Henry's death. Surely this is when his youngest child reached maturity as stated in Henry's Will!
The Division of the Estate went as follows: Note it was divided 4 ways = 4 unnamed children in the Will!
Reuben Rowland 100 acres
Micajah Rowland 200 acres
Mary Rowland 145 acres
Robert Rowland 180 acres
Henry Rowland obviously named his son Reuben for his own brother Reuben. And his son Micajah for his wife's father, Micajah Clark.
The following Bedford Co marriage records confirm the approximate ages of Henry's children and their names, again.
Reuben Rowland md. 8/25/1792 to Anna Patsey Ewing, Wm. Ewing surety
Micajah Rowland md. Sidney Ewing on 10/15/1793, consent of John Ewing
Mary Rowland md. Robert Moore - no date
Robert Rowland md. Taby White on 8/12/1790, consent of Stephen White, Wm. Leftwich surety.
Taby White was the d/o Stephen and Agatha Bramlett White, she d/o Wm. Bramlett who left a Will in 1750 Bedford.
Stephen White's other dtr Susannah md. James callaway on 7/12/1784 Bedford.
You might ask how I know that Robert was the sibling of Reuben and Micajah Rowland? Note that Wm. Leftwich was the surety for Taby White/Robert Rowland marriage. William Leftwich was also the security for the Will of Robert Ewing in 1786 Bedford Co.
So what? Well, Robert Ewing was the father of both Sidney and Anna Patsey Ewing who married Reuben and Micajah Rowland. Robert's Will named both dtrs - Sidney and Patsey!
I know you had previously posted another line for this Robert Rowland and I Do believe it is incorrect. I will gladly supply the Will Books etc. that support the info I give you here!
By the way - I BELIEVE - BUT CANNOT PROVE that Henry and Reuben Rowland were the sons of John Rowland and his possible wife, Elizabeth Terrell. THis John was the son of Thomas Rowland of Hanover Co. John had brothers David and Thomas.
