HISTORY NOTES: Rev Benjamin KELLEY
notes posted by source note 13 26 Feb 2004

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: The following is from: "A History of Kentucky
Baptists From 1769 to 1883, including more than 800 biographical
sketches by JH Spencer, the manuscript revised and corrected by Mrs.
Burrilla B. Spencer. In two Volumes, Vol II. Printed for the Author,
1886." p. 314:

"Benjamin Kelley was of Irish extraction, and the name was originally
written O'Kelley. His grandfather was the only child of Irish
parents, and was born on the Ocean, as his parents were emigrating to
America.

The parents settled in Virginia, and the child grew to manhood,
married, and raised a large family. His father returning to Ireland
to see after his estate, was supposed to have been lost at sea, as his
family never heard from him afterwards.

"Benjamin Kelley was born in Bedford County, Virginia, not far from
1763. At about the age of fifteen years, he came to Kentucky, and
sheltered himself from Indian fury, with the first settlers of the
country, at Boonesboro. In January 1778, while with a party of 27,
headed by Daniel Boone, engaged in making salt at Blue Lick, he, with
the whole party, was taken prisoner, by the Indians. He fell into the
hands of the tribe of which the notorious white renegade, Simon Girty,
was the Chief.

"An old squaw adopted him as her son, and he remained with the Indians
about six years. At the expiration of this time, aided by his foster
mother and an old Indian, he made his escape, and returned to his
parents, in Virginia. Here he married the daughter of David Jerrell
[sic], and afterwards emigrated with his father-in-law, to Kentucky.

"The next information we have of him, he was pastor of Mt. Pleasant
Church in Ohio county. He probably gathered this church, which was
constituted in 1814, and ministered to it about ten years. His labors
were greatly blessed in bringing sinners to Christ. His last sermon
was preached in the midst of a great revival, during the continuance
of which, about 100 had been added to the church. After baptizing
some converts, he went home, and was taken down with a violent fever.
He finally recovered from the fever, but he was bereft of reason, and
so remained till about two hours before his death, which occurred,
about 1824. After his reason returned, he talked freely of his hope
in Christ, and departed in joyous triumph."

An article entitled "First Settlers of Fordsville And A Short Account
of Their Lives; First Hand Corn Mill taken to Hartford; History of
Yates and Others" was written by Edwin Forbes and originally printed
in The Hartford Republican on October 8, 1909; it was reprinted on
November 11, 1982, on page 3 of the Times-News, Hartford, Kentucky in
the "Lineage Lines" column by Harry D. Tinsley.

A portion of the article follows:

"Fordsville, Ohio county, Ky., was settled by three early Kentucky
settlers, viz:-Benjamin Kelly, Ancil Hall and Richard Huff...Huff
settled on the northeast side of what is now the town of Fordsville.
Hall settled on the west side. Huff settled about the year 1793, but
it is not known at what time Kelly and Hall settled their farms, other
than that they were among the first settlers of this part of the
State.

Benjamin Kelly, when a small boy, was one of Daniel Boone's party,
taken prisoner by the Indians while making salt at the Blue Licks in
Nicholas county, and was taken to Detroit, Michigan where he made his
escape, taking with him an Indian tomahawk, presented to him by
Colonel McKee, the British Indian agent and principal advocate of the
war then existing between the United States and the savages. This
tomahawk is now owned by a grandson of Benjamin Kelly, living near
Fordsville.

"Ancil Hall was a prominent Baptist preacher of his time...Each of
these early settlers had a graveyard on his farm and their remains and
many of their relatives and friends were buried in them. The Kelly
graveyard is the Fordsville cemetery. The Huff graveyard is on Cedar
Hill, near the western corporation line.

"The early name of Fordsville was Kelly's Precinct in honor of
Benjamin Kelly and so remained until the year 184, when Galin Crowe of
Hartford established a post office at Fordsville in honor of Elisha M.
Ford at that time the main business man of Hartford and the first man
to establish a mercantile business at Kelly's Precinct..."

NOTES & INFO: In 1777, when Benjamin Kelley, age 15, left Virginia
with settlers to go to Boonesboro, Kentucky, John Kelley probably went
with him.

On October 14, 1779, the settlers at Fort Boonesboro signed a petition
in regard to land titles. John Kelley is on the list of those who
signed the petition.

October 16, 1779: A petition from Boone's Fort lists Benjamin Kelley
and Joseph Kelley, indicating that they had been killed in defense of
the fort or while hunting. Benjamin, however, had been captured by
Indians but not killed. Joseph Kelley was probably killed. Among
other names of those still alive was John Kelley.

BOONESBORO, KENTUCKY settler: The following is from "Boonesborough.
Its Founding, Pioneer Struggles, Indian Experiences, Transylvania
Days, and Revolutionary Annals with Full Historical Notes and
Appendix," by George W. Ranck. Filson Club Publication No. 16.
Louisville, Kentucky:
John P. Morton & Co., Printers to The Filson Club, 1901. [Numbered
444], pp. 107-108:

[The following describes Boonesborough in the year 1779.]

"Urged by their necessities and encouraged by a prospect of at least
temporary immunity from invasion, the settlers about Boonesborough
made unusual efforts to clear and cultivate the land, devoting by far
the greatest part of it to corn. The crops, as often before, were in
many cases made in common by companies organized for the purpose. A
tract was signed, directors elected, and the members appeared every
morning at the sound of a conch or beat of a drum, some to work in the
field and others to guard those who did work. A member failing to
comply with the contract forfeited his claim to the crop. A list of
the members of one of these companies is preserved.

[Footnote:] The list includes Benjamin White, Jesse Peake, James
Anthony, Nathaniel Hart, John Cartwright, Robert Cartwright, George
Maddern, Nicholas Anderson, John Harper, Peter Harper, William
Johnson, Whitson George, Edward Hall, William Hall, John Kelley,
Edward Williams, and Jesse Oldham. [U.S. Historical Register]"

DEATH & BURIAL: In the old Kelley cemetery located near Fordsville,
KY in Ohio County, is a tombstone with the following inscription:
"John C. Kelley, Died Sept 11 1851, Age 85 yrs." Copied by John
Blackburn on April 22, 1972.

Benjamin Kelley, an original settler of Ohio County, and original
owner of the land where the cemetery is located, is buried in this
cemetery also, but his stone is missing. Cemetery is now called the
Fordsville Cemetery. Benjamin and John were brothers. It seems
likely that this tombstone identifies the brother of Benjamin.

WILL: Benjamin Kelley's last will and testament was signed and sealed
by him on 7 June 1826, witnessed by J. W. Flanagan, Harbin P. Cole,
and John Smith. He named all of his children as follows: David J.
Kelley, Lydia Lyon, heir and representative of Ann Lyon, deceased, Amy
J. Crow, Benjamin (H.?) Kelley, Sarah A. Whitenhill, Mahala C. Kelley,
and William R. Kelley, his "youngest son, Norval C. Kelley" and his
wife, Nancy Kelley. He appointed Josiah Haynes, John B. Haynes, and
Nancy Kelley (his wife) executors and executrix. He apparently died
sometime prior to November, 1828; his will was proved in the November
County Court, 1828, Ohio County, Ky. Reference: F494934, p. 66 &
p. 81, Ohio County, KY Wills.
