I am not sure that this will be of much help to you, but the John A. Wright of the 1850 Botetourt County, Virginia, Census and in whose household your William Slack and Mary Chittum resided was 1886 (year of death) John Ashwith or Asher Wright of Bedford County, Virginia, (place of death), the son of 1841 Matthew Wright of Bedford County, Virginia, grandson of 1815 Joseph Wright of Bedford County, Virginia, and great grandson of 1763 Thomas Wright of Bedford County, Virginia. His wife was Sibyl (Craft) Wright.
1886 John A. Wright resided in Bedford County until about 1836, then resided in Botetourt County until about 1850, although he is also listed in Bedford County in 1848, and then resided in Bedford County for the remainder of his life.
I have no record of a Slack or Chittum in this family and, therefore, suspect that both William and Mary were hired help of the Wright family. They may also have been employed by Mary A. Craft and brought to the Wright household when she moved in with what I suspect was her daughter Sibyl.
Hope this is of some help to you.
