Lemuel Bates was born 8 Mar 1813 in Bedford county, Va. Death date unknown. He married Mary Newman 27 Feb 1838 in Bedford County. She was the daughter of Sallie. This is all the information that I have about Sallie except that in the 1850 census of Bedford county she was living next door to Mary Bates, household #38, age 44, Bird age 21, Elizabeth age 16, William age 10, Adam age 3. I did not find Nathan in the 1850 Bedford County Census. In the 1860 census she was living in Craig county, Va. next door to Mary Miller, thought to be Mary Bates from list of children.
