Ian, I don't know if this will help on Joseph Payne. Joseph Payne born 1758 in the Tidewater/Piedmont section of Virginia. This Joseph fought in the Revolutionary War (Ninth Va. Regiment and in Captain Smith Snead's Co.). He was captured by the British in Germantown, PA during September 1777. Held prisoner on Long Island NY until exchanged in November 1780. However, he married Ann Van Cleaf of NY on December 31, 1779 (prison life must not have been too confining). Joseph and Ann moved back to Joseph's home in Goochland County Va. In 1807 they brough land in the Green Valley area of Bath County from Cornelius and Louisa Payne (I don't know if these were relatives or not). Joseph and Ann's children were Nancy, Cornelia, Betsy, Levena, Mary, George, Richard, and Joseph Jr.(listed in no particular order). If related, I would guess the above Joseph Jr. would be a father of the Joseph you are looking for. As Joseph Sr. died in 1826. He is buried at the Windy Cove Presbyterian Church Cemetery at Millboro Springs, in Bath County. His grave is marked by a DAR placard. Hope this helps or gives you some leads. Tom Higgins, Rockbridge County Va
