I originally posted this to the Pritt family forum,
but it leads back to Bath county and I was
wondering if anyone who frequents this forum
can help me?
My original post to this forum went like this:
"Hi all you Pritts out there! I'm very interested in finding my Grandfather's ancestory...any information would be greatly appreciated. His name is David Alfred Pritt,
born Nov. 14, 1870 in Mill Creek or Huttonsville, died March 17, 1941.
His first wifes name was Lena Ramsey, married
Sept. 6, 1897. They had one daughter named
Serena Pritt, born in 1912. Lena died in 1914. David remarried Bertha Anna Etta McCauley on May 12, 1916 (my lineage).
David, Bertha and Lena are all buried in
Trinity Cemetary in Beverly, WV (Randolph
County). David and Bertha had 10 children,
the first of which died at age 6 months.
Bertha was born on Nov. 27, 1900 and died
on Jan. 30, 1952.
The information at this point gets sketchy.
David's parents were either William Pritt
of Randolph County. ( no mothers name given) OR John B. & Anna R. Pritt of Randolph County. Apparently David had a brother,
but no name can be found. If anyone has
additional information on David Pritt, I'd
be very grateful. Thanks aplenty,"
Since that time, about two years ago, I've gone back to
Elkins and on to Warm Springs to do research.
This is what I've found:
David Alfred (or Alfred David) is listed in the 1880
Randolph County census, along with his parents
William(40) and Elizabeth(46) Pritt. David's siblings are
Lucy(15), Henrietta(12), and John W.(5) William and Elizabeth Pritt were married in Randolph County on 11 July, 1862.
The documents stated that William Pritt married
Elizabeth PRITT ... yup. At the time, William was listed
as 23 years old, Elizabeth was 25.
The 1870 Randolph County census (Reynolds Township)
lists William 20, Lizzie 20, Henrietta 6, Lucy 4,
Virginia 70, and Asher 65.
My aunt Lottie has said that Thaddeus Pritt and David
Alfred are 1st cousins. Thaddeus Pritt is son of
John 'Dixie' Pritt & Miss Rose Crickard. So I would be
looking for a family with William and John as brothers.
Obviously, the ages listed for William and Elizabeth
in 1870 are not correct.
When I jump back to 1850 Randolph County, I find a family
listed that meets that criteria. John A.(44) and Rachel(46)
with family listed as James(13), William(11), John S.(8),
Mary E.(3), and Nancy A.(1). John A. and Rachel were both
born in Bath County Virginia. I believe they were married
by a B. Baldwin.
If I go to the 1860 census looking for the same family, I
find: John A. Pritt(50), James(22), Scott(16), Mary(13),
and Nancy A.(11). Rachel appears to be gone by this time.
She isn't listed anywhere else in the 1860 Randolph County
census. William Pritt(18) is listed, but under Charles Crouch ... possibly working on his farm ?
Once you go back to 1840, looking for John and Rachel, the
information gets particularly sketchy. I couldn't find
a family in Randolph County that matches my criteria.
Plus, family member names aren't listed .. just head of
household and family members divided up by ages.
I pursued the Bath County lead and headed to Warm Springs
Virginia. The 1840 Bath County census lists a John Pritt.
In his household, including him, there are 2 males under
the age of 5. 1 male 20-30. 1 female 20-30. That matches
my search. But I ran out of time in Warm Springs, as my
vacation was drawing to a close. I have to get back there
next summer and see the Ladies at the Courthouse again
to see what they can find regarding John A. and Rachel
My question(s) for you good folks:
Anyone have any information regarding John A. and Rachel Pritt ? Who were their parents ? When were they married ?
When were they born / died. The cemetary listings in
Randolph County do not seem to help on either John or
Rachel. The census information is tough to work with
pre-1850 also. Meticulous records obviously were NOT kept.
It appears that John & Rachel moved from Bath County to
Randolph County sometime between 1840 and 1850.
My family has been in these hills for 200 years ... maybe
more. ANY information that you might have would be
EXTREMELY APPRECIATED ! Thanks!
