Staunton has always been the county seat of Augusta County, Virginia. Inquire there, with an SASE.

I believe the early records of all Virginia counties have been microfilmed, and the original records are stored in Richmond at the Library of Virginia. I could be wrong, but that is where I would inquire after checking with the county if I were searching.

Also, you might try at the LDS local Family History Center. LDS church has many of the early records on microfiche as well as microfilm.

Good luck!
