States: Virginia: Amherst
Mary Elizabeth Fitzjerrel born April 1839 and Nuten Neice born May 1828 were married May 9, 1857 in Amherst County, Virginia by Pitt Woodruff. There are Fitzgeralds in Amherst in the 1860 census and in 1810 but there are none in 1850. Is part of the 1850 Amherst census missing? There are several Fitzgerald families in Nelson County but I could not find Mary, Mary E, M E, Elizabeth, Eliza, Lizzie etc of the correct age there or any nearby county in the 1850 census. Perhaps a Fitzgerald will might list a Mary Elizabeth who married a Newton Nice, Nease, Neice, Niece, or Neal. Are there other Fitzjerrel (Fitzgerald, etc) marriages in Amherst from 1850-1860? If so perhaps I can link one of them to Mary Elizabeth. Nuten Neice is a 18 year old Newton Nease in 1850, the only other person living with James Martin 66. In 1900 heís Newton Nice. Newton was in the 58th VA Infantry. Neither his pension application or his wifeís widowís application give any family info except they say they were born in Amherst County. I canít find Nice, Nease, neice, etc in the 1830 or 1840 census. I wonder if Nice,Neice, etc is Knight.
Are there church or tax records for the 1828 to 1860 time period for Amherst County? Newton and Mary eventually lived in the Pedlar district of Amherst. I donít know where Mary lived in the 1850s. Iím trying to find male Fitzjerrels (sic) and Neice, Nice, Neases who may be the father of Mary and Newton. In 1880 in Amherst, Mary Elizabeth and Newton have William 22, Newton 18, Susana 19, Nancy 14, Martha 12, James 8, Charles 6, Sarah 4 and Samuel 2 at home..
Any suggestions, advice, help, etc appreciated.
