A few months ago, we learned the results of DNA tests on two families of Hughes who were in Old Amherst County, in the area that is now Nelson County, Virginia. DNA results on descendants of these two Hughes branches matched which shows they share a common ancestor. Moses Hughes lived in the Three Ridge area of Nelson County. My 4x great grandfather was William Hughes who lived near the James River in Scottville. William Hughes and Moses Hughes were brothers as clearly recorded in the will dated 1779 of their father Thomas Hughes, Jr., and filed in Albemarle County. William was born about 1743 in Albemarle County, Virginia, and his brother Moses was born about 1745. Moses Hughes moved to what is now Nelson County, and William Hughes stayed in Albemarle. William's son John Hughes (m. Mary Polly William Jean in Albemarle County) moved to Nelson County, Virginia. The wills of Thomas Hughes, Jr., and his sons William and Moses Hughes are transcribed on my family tree site at rootsweb. Moses Hughes married Elizabeth Ball, and William Hughes is supposed to have married Mary Ball (still looking for proof of this marriage). There ia another Hughes family in Amherst County, with the earliest known ancestor of William Hughes. He married Susan Ball. We are waiting on the results of DNA testing on a descendant of this family. If you have any information on these Hughes families, or would like to hear about the research, please email me at vapsmith@yahoo.com. Notify Administrator about this message?
