Robert W. Smith b 1830 in VA may have been from the Lynchburg or Amherst Co, VA area. He was a drill sharpener and worked on the Stump House Mountain Tunnel that was to connect Charleston SC and TN. The tunnel was never finished. Some time after the Civil War Robert went to SC near Pelzer and married Cassie Chandler. Their children were Frank, Robert, James, Jeff, Bell, Mary, Eliza, Mattie, Augustus "Gus", and Willis. Looking for anyone with connections to this family.
