You may have found the answers to your questions, but:
I have looked in the 1840 and 1850 Census for Alleghany Co., VA. I found the following
1840 Census: William Kirkpatrick, 1 male 15-20, 2 males 20-20; 1 female 20-30 and 1 female 40-50
They only listed heads of households in 1840.

1850 Census
291/292 in household of John A Black William Kirkpatrick 38, laboroer, born VA.

302-302 Kirkpatrick, Mary 49; Margaret 46; Jane 36; Joseph 24; and Andrew 3.

Very briefly going through the 1860 Census, I did not see the name Kirkpatrick.
