The John A. Foster born in the generation that would have fought in the War Between the States was the son of Thomas Foster and Elizabeth Browning. Thomas Foster died in 1845 and instructed in his will that his wife purchase land in Lewis/Upshur County, then still part of Virginia. She did so and appeared there in the 1850 Census. This Thomas Foster was the son of Edmund Foster Jr. and Betsy Powers.

An earlier John A. Foster was born ca. 1805 and was the son of William Foster and Mary Alexander.

Both families were kin to each other, but I am still researching specifics. Edmund Foster Jr. came from Louisa County to Albemarle County with his father in 1789-1790, where they settled in the vicinity of North Garden, Israel's Gap, Batesville, and Greenwood in the southern part of the county.
