Arsemous Utterback, Sarah Patterson and son James Henry Utterback

I'm having an issue connecting a son James Henry Utterback to his parents, believed to be Arsemous Utterback and Sarah J. Patterson.

On Jame's Henry's death certificate, a A. Utterback and Sarah Ann Patterson are listed as parents, however, his birth date is listed in 1863, where Arsemous didn't marry his first wife until after he left the service in 1866, and her name was Cynthia. He married his second wife, Sarah J. Patterson in 1878.

The weird part is James Henry was born in 1863 in Ohio. His father Aresmous entered the army a couple of months later in early 1864 from Indiana. He married his first wife in 1866 in Indiana. After his first wife died, Arsemous returned to Ohio and married his second wife Sarah J. Patterson.

I guess it is completely possible James Henry was illegitimate and Arsemous did the right think later and married James' mother, but I might be missing something.

Of course, I can't find Arsemous or James Henry in a 1870 census together. I do find them in subsequent census with Sarah J with James Henry listed as their son.

Does anyone have any info on this branch of the Utterbacks that would help me tie these loose ends?
