COX Families Including CANTRELL,MOZINGO,HUFFMAN, KEY, HOPKINS , WISEMAN, GANNAWAY, DOWELL, CARTER,O’BRIEN,
Hello - This is two parts (1) What we Know (2) What we Think. Let me also advise that grammar, punctuation, and spelling are not priorities. I’m just trying to get the info out there to help others with research and hopefully expand our knowledge of this Cox Line.
WHAT WE KNOW
Samuel COX b: 1810 - 1813 (depending on Census) KY, d: 1880 Vernon Co., Missouri
E(llen) Eliza MOZINGO (various spellings) b: 04/12/1825 , d: 05/06/1905 Camden Mo., Cableridge Cem.
Married: about 1848 prob St Clair Co MO.

c:1880 Virgil Twp, Dist16, Vernon, O.(Note “Chamuel” 70, E Eliza 55, & James 21.
PS Sam is very consistent to state he is b: KY,& his father b: VA later W/VA). Also note that portions of West VA were previously PA - so take all of this into consideration when searching.
LAND PURCHASES: Note: St Clair formed 1841 from Rives (formed1834)which became Henry(1841). Rives originally came from Lafayette which was renamed from Lillard. Whew…. Samuel purchased:

Ezekiel 06/1845 Sec 27 St Clair
John 10/1845 Sec 34 St Clair
These are names of Sam’s kids--but they would not be old enough to purchase land in ‘44/’45.
“Naming Pattern” suggests that the 1st son be named after the male’s father I.e. would be Ezekiel.
Some of lineage info came from my Grandmother, Sadie (Martin) m:Jodie Cox son of Joseph Cephus b: 1851. Other from letters from Nellie (Cox) Gorrell daughter of Walter Parker b: 1874. Some from Vi (Rucker) m: Bob P Cox b 1911 (thank you) Some from research trips and lots from internet cleanings.

WHAT WE THINK
LDS (Utah) says Samuel m: Mary Cantwell. I find NO info to confirm this. I did get a copy of a marriage document for Samuel Cox and Nancy Cantrell m: 03/18/1832, Lafayette, MO. Also the following document Charles Cantrell Jr b: 1786 Randolph NC. FYI: His father, Charles Sr b: 1750, PA, m: Sarah Murray.
“Between 1799 - 1805 Chs Jr accompanied parents on the move to Knox, KY, a trip that eventually ended in Fannin, TX fifty years later. HIS ( Jr) FIRST MARRIAGE WAS IN KNOX, KY BY 1809 (at 23). He (Jr) and his wife? and baby daughter* were listed living with his parents in Knox KY c1820. The family migrated towards Missouri beginning in 1817 (from NC). There may have been other Cantrell families (yes) with them. They were not noted on the c1820 for MO (it was not officially a state) but we do know (Chs Jr) was In MO as he is listed c1830 Lafayette, MO with a daughter of the first marriage and two children from the second. Note Chs Jr (m: (#2) Naomi ‘Amy’ Cox b: 1798 Knox KY married 07/26/1826 Lexington MO”(etc) see:
I believe that Chs Jr’s ‘baby daughter’(b:1810-1820)to be Nancy Cantrell* - Our Samuel’s 1st wife. I will explain c1830 MO for Sam later. Remember they were married Mar 18 1832.
c1840 lists head: Samuel Cox m 1811-1820), a(f 1811-1820) Nancy (Cantrell?),
2 f (1831-1835)Elizabeth b:1834 MO, Evaline b: 1835 MO
2 f (1836-1840)Cynthia b:1837 MO,Dicy Jane b: Feb1838 MO
Living next house up: Philip Cantrell& family (son of Joseph, who is Chs Jr’s brother)
Living next house up: ChristopherCantrell & family
Living next house down: William R Cantrell (son of Wm, who is Chs Jr’s brother)
This BEGS the answers…..Why, How and When did Sam get to Lafayette MO??
Here’s my conclusion: Recall a John & Keziah in c1850 St Clair Co? He purj’d land St Clair 1845. Sec 34.
A John also purj’d land in Lafayette Mo1835 & 1838 Sec’s 3 & 4 (see c1830 below)
NEARBY: Silas Cox Sec 11, 1833
Various Helm’s sec 2, 3, 9, 11, 28, & 29, 1828 - 1836
Ezekiel Cox Sec 4, 1838
Charles Cantrell Sr Sec 3 1833
Other nearby early Lafayette Co MO landowners:
Solomon(s?)Cox purchases14 sections 1820 thru 1838 +1848
Samuel Cox III (son of Sam/Martha)? purj’s Sec 17, 1827 & Sec 20, 1834
Jesse Cox, purj’d 1835
William(s?) Cox between 1831- 1838
Elihu Cox 1835
Christopher Cox 1830
Joseph (s?) Cox between 1833 - 1839
Hiram Helm 1825 & 1828
Stephen Austin 1836
James Welch between 1834 - 1838
There is a family in c1830 Lafayette MO: Head: JOHN
m 1761-1770, m 1781-1790 (which one is John???)
m 1811-1815 Sam?
f 1811-1815 Sister
Is this John same as St Clair c1850?) & his pa?
I have exhausted my search for this connection -- anyone have info??????
Some Clarifiction (hopefully to save you time):
William Cox (prob b: abt 1780 WVA, is in c1830 w/wife (Mary Austin). Their 4 sons Joseph/Helm, Elihu/Helm, James Silas/Helm & Christopher/Williams each have their own homes. See a name pattern with our Samuel? -- BUT I can’t find ANYTHING to connect him. These 4 boys born in Louisville, Jefferson, KY. Wm was a judge there. Note - women popped babies every 2 years(for a thousand years it seems) so it seems obvious since they married appx 1799 (and Mary didn’t die until 1855), there should be more children. But darned if I can find them! There is info on internet re James Silas and especially his son Silas ‘Poke’ and some History. A Sherri Woods feels this is the how the lineage goes: Isaac 1706 PA, John PA 1742, William died: 1851 (b:1780? VA, Christopher Columbus 1805 KY, Isum Lihan 1833 MO,Susan Ann 1854 MO-- but Sherri post says “ not proven”. (I get hung up on John 1742 vs.1750 and Wm 1780/1770)
'Henry’ William Cox Sr (prob b:1782 VA, #1 Martha Cantrell. i c1830 .w/2nd wife (Sary Cantrell) with 8 kids/spouses?? etc and 3 of his sons- Hugh/Cantrell, Nathan/Cantrell, and Joshua/Mitchell have their own homes. Another son Henry Wm Jr m: Cantrell in 1836. All b: KY --NO room for our Samuel in this family
(Many of both of the above 2 families left Missouri early and went to Texas by way of Arkansas (avoid Indians in Oklahoma). Assume our Sam stayed behind with Cantrell families then Nancy died and he moved more Southern in MO and remarried.) Supposedly one of the above Wm’s father is John L b 1763 NC/m: Fellows.
William Cox b: 1770 is there with his wife & 8 kids b: TN. I believe the note I found that (THIS) William Cox & James Welch were among 1st settlers in Lafayette and they came from TN.) I believeSome are getting all these Wm’s Mixed up. (not our Sam (KY) -- (these were born in TN)
And you guessed it - another William Cox b: 1770 m: Jane is there with the GRANDKIDS Checked his sons-- (not our Sam either)
** Samuel Champion b: 1753, VA (continued from WHAT WE KNOW above.
If, for some reason OUR Sam doesn’t work out from c1830 or c 1840, Lafayette, MO, he could belong in this line - seems logical since they were all together in c1850 St Clair, MO. B U T Sam’s dad would have had to be 17 when Sam was born. (doubtful-but possible)
1 Wm (the Younger)COX, b:1687 Henrico,VA m: Sarah COCKE 1696-1730( 9 kids including….
2. John of Bluestone)COX,1710 - 1793 Mecklenburg, VA m: Lucretia WYNNE 1712-1791 nine kids including…..
3. Thomas COX Sr b abgt 1743 Henrico VA m: Obedience UNKNOWN b: abt 1745 Henrico Seven kids including…..
4. Samuel COX b:1789 VA m: Sarah ‘Sally’ HUTT. 07/12/1806 in Mecklenburg VA.
* 5. Samuel b 1806-1821 (dad 17 if Sam was born 1st)
5. John b 1806-1821
5. Mary b 1806-1821
5. William Bluford COX b: abt 1806, KY
5. Emily Jane COX b: 11/1822, KY
m#2 Ellen Jane BROWN b abt 1806 KY m:10/25/1823 Mercer KY 12 children to this union
Other tidbits I’ve found-
Jonathan COX b 1784, Muhlenberg, KY m: Keziah MURPHY ( b: 1789??) In Muhlenberg KY 12/1810
Father: Joseph COX b: 1750-1760 d: 1839 Muhlenberg KY m: 1780 Nancy UNKNOWN - 9 kids
Or father: John L b 1754 Beaufort, NC (see Sanders-Nelson Family Tree Entries 19849 10/20/2005)
David Clinton COCKE b abt 1748 d 1827 VA
John COX B ABT 1742 Brownsville, Fayette, PA d: abt 1828 Frankfort, Franklin, KY confusing but possible.
Have investigated Ezekiel’s and Isaac’s and quite frankly - am exhausted and discouraged with EVER finding
Samuel’s upline. Hopefully someone out there has some thoughts or suggestions or knowledge.
It would have been helpful if the founding fathers would have insisted on middle names and/or initials,
and passed a law that every family cannot repeat John, Williams, Solomons, Samuels James, Mary
Elizabeth and a whole bunch more.
Good luck - hope this helps someone, somewhere. I‘m dead-ended and have 11 -3 ring binders FULL of ’Cox’ and STILL don’t know his daddy. I am wondering if our Sam had another first name--but goes by Samuel.??
