Irish Mormoms? Yep, that's my problem, or so it seems. My understanding is that there aren't and never were many Irish Mormons, but acccording to US Census records, I had great-great grandparents that were just that - but I can't get any info on them! Here is what I know:
My great-grandfather (mother's mother's father) was one James Elias WRIGHT, born August 29, 1864 in Big Cottonwood Canyon, Utah (birthdate is composite, based on census records and the death certificate). By 1891, James was a resident of Manti - there he married my great-grandmother, Jensine Petrine NIELSEN from Denmark (9 Jun 1872 - 21 Jul 1948). According to the 1900 US Census (Mammoth Precinct, Juab County, Utah), James stated that he was born in August of 1864. He also stated that his father was born in Germany (?) and his mother in Ireland. In the 1910 US Census (Ketchum Precinct, Blaine County, Idaho), James stated that both mother and father were born in Ireland. Further evidence for the Irish connection is that a woman in the 1920 Census in SLC appears to be my grandmother's sister, Edith. Edith stated quite clearly that her mother was born in Denmark and spoke Danish (true!), and that her father was born in Utah (also true) and spoke Irish!
James Elias WRIGHT died on December 19, 1922 in SLC. According to his death certificate, his father's name was James WRIGHT. Country of father's birth, mother's maiden name and her country of origin were given as unknown - not helpful.
I have checked the 1870 and 1880 US Census records and cannot find my great-grandfather anywhere, nor can I find a James WRIGHT born in Ireland with a wife born there as well. I did find a James WRIGHT in the 1880 Census with a son named James E., but he was born in Scotland and his wife in England, and James E was born in 1872. If this is the right WRIGHT family, then what's with all the Irish bit? I really need help with this - I've been researching this for ages and am getting nowhere, fast! More info on the WRIGHT family can be provided if necessary! THANKS!
