Gilliland's Rites Pend
Scott City Man, Native Of Cowley, Dies Here

James Arthur Gilliland, Sott City, Kansas, a native of Cowley County, died in Memorial Hospital here at 8:35 p. m. Wednesday. He has been here since Dec. 28, recieving medical treatment and visiting his mephews and niece, Bob Gilliland, 1338 N. Fourth St. Lloyd Gilliland, Rt. 3, and Mrs Lambert Stoffel, 1326 N. 15th St.
Gillliland was a rancher in Oklahoma Territory before the Cherokee Strip opening, near Ralston, Oklahoma. He moved from the Indian territory to Arlington, Colorado, where he opend a lumber yard. He served as a sheriff of Scott County, 1925-1926 and 1927.
Born in Cowley County,east of Arkansas City, April 21, 1875, the son of James Hugh and Margret Snyder Gilliland, he was well known in the Maple City area.
James A. Gilliland and Anna Elizabeth Christy were married in Winfield, Decmber 30, 1896. Mrs Gilliland died Dec. 17, 1951.
Survivors include four daughters, Mrs Leona Dague of the home in Scott City, Mrs Tom (Hazel) Welch, Dalhert, Texas, Mrs. Marguerite Neunschwander, Cedaredge, Colorado, and Mrs. John (Jaunita) Bover, Scott City: one son Hugh Gilliland, Moab, Utah, one brother Frank Gilliland, Rt 3: 16 granchildren and 25 great grandchildren.
Gilliand was preceeded in death by his parents, his wife, two sons, James Arthur Jr. an infant son: four brothers, Bert, Charles, Tom and Guy and six siters, Mrs Lizzie Ramsey, Mrs Lillie Woods, Mrs Nell Robinson, Mrs. Lida Galloway, Annie Gilliland and Mrs. Mary Crawford.
Gilliland was a member of Maple City Lodge, AF & AM 342 recieving his 50 year jeweled pin at Maple City January 8, 1962: was a member of the Scottish Rites bodies in Pueblo, Colorado and was a life member of the Sothern Colorado Consistory at Pueblo. He also belonged to the Shrine at Pueblo.
The Jess Rindt Morturay is in charge of local arrangements. Funeral services will be held at Scott City, with burial in the Scott City Cemetery, with the time of service pending.
