Found a picture of Grammie and Grampie on Ancestry. The info contained a picture of young Edward Joseph Jr. Yes, I remember the face. He trained at Little Creek, VA. We went to Houston, Texas and commissioned the USS LSM 383 at Brown Shipyard.

We trained at Gavinston, Texas before loadind Ammo at Gulf Port, Mississippi. From there to the Cannal and to San Diago and Long Beach, Cal. From there we went West to the War Zone.

We had a rough ride August 1 from Buckner Bay, Okinawa toward Japan. We sailed back to Okinawa through Formosa Straits back to Buckner Bay.

We had air raids nights, even after the A-bombs were dropped. The USS Pensylvania, the adjactent Ancorage to us was hit, killing a number of men. Our Commanding officer took pictures the next morning. I have copies of that ship.

Ken Newman, about 11 months older than your great-grandfather. Contact me at kennethlnewman@bellsouth.net.
