I have looked it up in historical newspapers and the San Francisco Chronicle has an article about the crash and the year is 1935 and Time magazine had a article dated Feb. 25 1935. So in isn't just "websites" relaying incorrect information which they are known to do.
Records at the NARA:
"Textual Records: Correspondence, reports, blueprints, photographs, and other records pertaining to the design, construction, inspection, and testing of the rigid airship ZRS-5 (U.S.S. Macon), 1932-35."
Thanks for the memories looking it up, my dad was career Navy, based at El Toro for a couple of years and I remembered the Blimp hangers, which I haven't thought of in years.
