John S. Bender US Navy 1940-1948

My grandfather John S. Bender was enlisted in the Navy during the years of 1940-1948, that is the only information we really have. I am hoping to find any information on his tours or ships he was assigned to. We are pretty sure he was on the USS Northapton when it sank but any info prior to or following that assignment is unknown. any information would be greatly appreciated.
