George is my gr-gr-gr-grandfather and would love to have any information you may have on him. It has been passed down through the family that George was the 'Dare-Devil' of the 11th Maine, but the details of his military career unfortunately has been lost over time. I know from written history from the wife of George's son that he was known to his comrades during the war as 'Old Grizzely'. Even though he was a very kind and fun loving person, he was supposedly like a demon during battle.
Legend has it that he almost died during the Mexican War, the doctor having pronounced he will die from a gunshot to the stomache, but a young doctor created a tool and removed the ball.
Also some info about him being captured during one of the Indian wars, then marrying an 'Indian Princess' and serving as their Chief for a while. They were suppose to have had children, but no one has been able to find any details on this.
He could trace his ancestors back to the Mayflower passengers Constance Hopkins and her father Steven.
I have quite a bit of info on the family itself, but not a lot on his military career. He is buried in the Sawyer Cemetery in Plymouth Maine. I took some pictures of his stone, though I am planning on going back to take another picture when I get a chance. I live about 30 miles away from Plymouth where most of my family have lived for generations, and where my grandparents still live.
