How can I verify that Henry H. Bryan served in the 1st Regiment, Mississippi Volunteers, in the Mexican-American War? An article in the Tarboro Press (Edgecomb County, North Carolina), July 14, 1849, indicates his service. Why would a young man from eastern North Carolina volunteer in Mississippi at that time?
